As an area of study, it assesses how we interact with others using technology, how we can develop technology to best fit our requirements, and how our behaviour and psychological states are influenced by technology. The most commonly studied technology in cyberpsychology research is the Internet, although the area considers human interactions with many devices which may not necessarily be online, including mobile computing, games consoles, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence. This chapter provides a brief overview of some areas of research in cyberpsychology, including a short introduction to each of the chapters that follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Chapter Summary<\/summary>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overview<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cyberpsychology is a relatively new field in applied psychology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There is an increasing amount of research and writing in the area.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While the most commonly studied technology in the field is the Internet, cyberpsychology also encompasses human interactions with other technologies, such as mobile computing, gaming, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cyberpsychology: A Brief Synopsis<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Cyberpsychology generally encompasses three main aspects:<ul><li>How we interact with others using technology.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>How we develop technology to best fit our requirements and desires.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How our behaviour and psychological states can be affected by technologies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are many areas of research within cyberpsychology, including topics such as online hostility, privacy management, impression management, online dating, social media, linguistics, work psychology, health psychology, consumer behaviour online, well-being, and cybercrime.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An important development has been the inclusion of \u201cInternet Gaming Disorder\u201d as a phenomenon which requires further research within the American Psychiatric Association\u2019s <em>Diagnostic and Statistical Manual<\/em>, 5th edition, in 2013.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>While cyberpsychology has examined the potential applications of virtual reality for some time, this has become a topic of increasing interest as consumer-oriented versions of such devices become available.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Human behaviour while interacting with artificial intelligence is also of interest within cyberpsychology, particularly in relation to companionship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cyberpsychology Journals, Conferences, and Research Groups<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>While cyberpsychology is a relatively new field, there are many journals and conferences which focus on cyberpsychology specifically, or Internet-based sociological research in a broader sense.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are also many research groups in the field, as well as academic courses on offer by higher educational institutions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Aims and Structure of the Book<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This book aims to provide readers with an introduction to the field of cyberpsychology.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It particularly focuses on applied aspects of the field.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Each chapter includes additional resources within the book itself, as well as online resources.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The book comprises four main sections, with a total of 22 chapters.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part 1&nbsp;
