Western views about health and disease have been shaped by religion, historical developments in scientific knowledge and the development of the biomedical view of disease. How reductions in infectious diseases and growth in chronic diseases, influenced by psychological (e.g. beliefs, emotions, stress and attitudes) and social factors (e.g. family, friends, peers and healthcare interactions) highlighted the inadequacies of the biomedical model and led to the development of the biopsychosocial and ecological models of health. We will examine the ethnocentric view of \u2018West being best\u2019, two Indigenous models of health, before exploring the subjugation and cultural appropriation of Indigenous health practices.
