Early theories of pain are outlined, along with their deficiencies that have led to the development of theories that recognise the psychosocial and cultural aspects of pain. The experiences of pain are explored in relation to gender identity, sexual orientation and within Indigenous groups. Different ways of measuring pain are outlined, along with the importance of determining the cultural relevance of measures.
