All manner of commercial and human transactions can now be conducted online through omnichannel communication. There is no need to speak to an individual or interact with a traditional organisation such as a shop, a bank, or an agency. Corporations will continue to seek globalised efficient solutions with diverse teams. The workplace today is different, as workers have had to adapt to the constant challenge of change, and flexible remote working may remain the norm in a post-pandemic world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This chapter will outline the emerging challenges that technology poses to organisations, particularly in the workplace. It will address the transition to new working environments that embrace new technologies. The aim is to explore issues of working in a virtual environment, working with virtual teams, and team dynamics. The challenges and opportunities that technology poses will be explored and the future scope of work will be considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Chapter Summary<\/summary>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organizations Today \u2013 The Online Workplace<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where We Have Come From<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Traditional manufacturing organizations were the backbone of many towns and cities prior to the age of the Internet. Many of these workplaces were housed in a building.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In the past organizations employed thousands of skilled workers.&nbsp; Many people worked in heavy industries.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Traditional organizations had clear boundaries with layers of management.&nbsp; There were clear boundaries between functional units.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These organizations were often slow to change to the needs of the market economy due to their size.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What about Today?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Organizations are smaller and flatter. There are fewer managerial layers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New organizations have a web presence as well as buildings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>E-commerce, the digital marketplace, and physical stores are the drivers of the economy. The online presence of businesses has been accelerated due to COVID-19.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The consumption of the movie and music industries has also changed to include an online presence.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Web platforms have changed the everyday dynamics of communications and business transactions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>People\u2019s purchasing behaviour has changed \u2013 people buy online.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The modern workplace and workers are adaptable and flexible.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Companies have a global presence and virtual teamworking has become a norm.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenge of Change<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Today\u2019s fast-paced technological environments demand that companies are interconnected and respond to change rapidly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Technology is driving change and efficiencies in a fast-paced economy. Change needs to happen quickly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many companies embrace failure as an opportunity to learn and grow improving products and services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">It\u2019s a New World \u2013 The Virtual Environment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Virtual Organization<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>COVID-19 has influenced how virtual organizations conduct their business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtual Organizations are flexible networks of independent entities that are linked together with information technology.&nbsp; They share skills, knowledge, and expertise. Collaboration is essential.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The traditional boundaries of organizations have been broken and today we have \u2018boundaryless\u2019 organizations \u2013 which have a global scope.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Virtual Teams<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Virtual Teams operate with virtual organizations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Virtual Teams can be temporary and may work together on specific projects.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>These teams are similar to traditional teams in that they are goal and performance-orientated.&nbsp; However, the team may not be situated in the one building or country and IT is used for collaboration. Virtual teams may be disbanded once a project has been completed. COVID-19 demonstrated the effectiveness of virtual team working.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are challenges to working in Virtual Teams, these include a lack of physical interaction and the lack of non-verbal cues. The clarification of team roles also needs clarification. Cross-cultural issues need to be understood by team members.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The psychological safety within teams needs consideration in order for teams to be successful.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenges That Technology Poses for Modern People<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Career Planning<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Career planning is different than in the past.&nbsp; The world appears smaller and travel and education are less expensive.&nbsp; This offers improved carer choices.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Careers are more flexible and workers can create and re-create their careers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workers must take responsibility for managing their own careers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Workers need to develop a \u2018boundaryless mindset\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The gig economy is rising in popularity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Darker Side of Technology<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Technology can have some unwelcome challenges.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Issues of \u2018cyberslacking\u2019, \u2018cyberdevient behaviour\u2019, and cyberbullying can be problematic.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Consideration of digital intrusion and cognitive overload is needed by employers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New EU legislation has been put in place to protect workers concerning the right to disconnect from tasks after working hours.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Robust policies and social and organizational support are needed to support victims.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Challenges for the Future of Work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Future Scope<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Competition and new technologies will continue to drive change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Change is disruptive and disruptive technological innovations will create the jobs of the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>New organizational structures and cultures will continue to emerge. Many of these will be small, remote, cross-cultural, hybrid, and environmentally friendly organisations.&nbsp; There will still be space for the global corporations.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>There are advantages and disadvantages to working from home.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Going forward organisations need to consider cybersecurity and General Data Protection Regulations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back to the Future?<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Before the Industrial Revolution, the workforce was made up of artisans and agricultural workers. As a result, the world is being transformed and this world is more open and transparent. This talk he outlines four core principles that show how this open world can be a better place.
