Instructions
Chapter 14 has eight sets of exercises, with corresponding instructions for each exercise below.
Answers must use the appropriate capitalization/case, punctuation, and accents to be considered correct. Answers must be typed in lower case (except for initial capital letters a sentence) and use a full stop at the end of a sentence. Other examples of correct punctuation include putting a space before exclamation marks / question marks / semi-colons / colons in French; using French guillemets; putting titles (including film titles) in italics, and so on.
Exercise 1: Yes/no questions: formation with est-ce que (write-in)
Translate the following yes/no questions into French with est-ce que at the beginning of each one. For example, Has he left? = Est-ce qu’il est parti?
Exercise 2: Yes/no questions: formation with subject–verb inversion (write-in)
Translate the following yes/no questions into French by inverting the subject pronoun and the verb and adding a subject pronoun when the subject is a noun. For example, Has he left? = Est-il parti? Has David left? = David, est-il parti?
Exercise 3: Yes/no answer forms : oui, si, non (multiple choice)
Translate the answers given in brackets in each question and select the most correct form from the options provided.
Exercise 4: Information questions: without subject or direct object (write-in)
Transform each information question from informal, spoken French by placing the question word/s at the beginning of each sentence followed by est-ce que. For example, Il pleure pourquoi? = Pourquoi est-ce qu’il pleure?
Exercise 5: Information questions: without subject or direct object (write-in)
Transform each information question from informal, spoken French into formal style by placing the question word/s at the beginning of each sentence, followed by subject–verb inversion. Remember to add a subject pronoun when the subject is a noun. For example, Il pleure pourquoi? = Pourquoi pleure-t-il? Mehdi pleure pourquoi? = Pourquoi Mehdi pleure-t-il ?
Exercise 6: Information questions: subject and direct object questions (multiple choice)
Select the most grammatically appropriate question form based on the underlined element.
Exercise 7: Questions with quel and lequel (write-in)
Complete each question by translating the words in brackets into French. Type only your translation of the missing words in the answer box. For example, Votre fils a lu (which books?) = quels livres?
Exercise 8: Indirect questions: formation (write-in)
Complete each sentence to form indirect questions. Type only the missing part of the indirect question in the answer box. For example, Est-elle enceinte? (Je ne sais pas…) = si elle est enceinte. A-t-il entendu la nouvelle? (Je ne savais pas…) = s’il avait entendu la nouvelle.
