Chapter 16: Negation


Instructions

Chapter 16 has nine sets of exercises, with corresponding instructions for each exercise below. 

Answers must use the appropriate capitalization/case, punctuation, and accents to be considered correct. Answers must be typed in lower case (except for initial capital letters a sentence) and use a full stop at the end of a sentence. Other examples of correct punctuation include putting a space before exclamation marks / question marks / semi-colons / colons in French; using French guillemets; putting titles (including film titles) in italics, and so on.

Exercise 1: ne…pas as a sentence negator (multiple choice)

Select the correct answer to make each sentence negative by adding ne…pas in the appropriate positions.

Exercise 2: ne…pas negating infinitives (multiple choice)

Select the correct answer to make each sentence negative by adding ne…pas in the appropriate positions. 

Exercise 3: Idioms: pas negating words and phrases (multiple choice)

Select the most accurate and idiomatic translation of each popular phrase which generally exclude ‘ne’ in spoken French.

Exercise 4: ne…que: uses and position (write-in)

Translate each restrictive construction by using ne…que in the correct position.

Exercise 5: ne…aucun: uses and position (write-in)

Translate each sentence by using ne…aucun in the correct position.

Exercise 6: ne…jamais : uses and position (multiple choice)

Select the correct form to transform each affirmation and questions into sentences with ne…jamais in the correct position. For example, Je veux sortir = Je ne veux jamais sortir.

Exercise 7: ne…plus and ne…guère: uses and position (multiple choice)

Select the correct answer to make each sentence negative by adding ne…plus and ne…guère in the appropriate positions according to the prompt in brackets.

Exercise 8: ne…rien and ne personne : uses and position (multiple choice)

Select the correct option to answer to each question, answering in the negative by adding ne…rien or ne…personne in the appropriate positions according to the prompt in brackets. For example, Qu’est-ce qu’elle fait? (nothing) = Elle ne fait rien

Exercise 9: Combining negators (multiple choice)

Select the correct translation of the negative sentences.
