Instructions
Chapter 3 has 12 sets of exercises, with corresponding instructions for the exercises below.
Answers must use the appropriate capitalization/case, punctuation, and accents to be considered correct. Answers must be typed in lower case (except for initial capital letters a sentence) and use a full stop at the end of a sentence. Other examples of correct punctuation include putting a space before exclamation marks / question marks / semi-colons / colons in French; using French guillemets; putting titles (including film titles) in italics, and so on.
Exercise 1: Subject pronouns: ‘tu’ or ‘vous’ ? (write-in)
Complete each sentence by conjugating the verb in brackets with the appropriate ‘you’ form.
Exercise 2: Third person subject pronouns: ‘il/elle’ and ‘ils/elles’ (write-in)
Transform each sentence in this exercise. First, identify the third person singular and plural subjects. Then, change the noun subjects into subject pronouns. Type your answers as subject + verb. For example, Le professeur va à la banque = Il va.
Exercise 3: Impersonal verbs in formal language: ‘il’ versus ‘ce/cela’ (write-in)
Translate the impersonal verbs in brackets preceded by the appropriate formal subject pronoun (il/ce/cela).
Exercise 4: Impersonal verbs in informal/spoken language: ‘il’ versus ‘ce/ça’ (write-in)
Translate the impersonal verbs in brackets preceded by the appropriate subject pronoun (il/ce/ça) using initial capital letters as required.
Exercise 5: ‘C’est’ versus ‘il/elle est’ (multiple choice)
Complete each sentence by selecting the appropriate subject pronoun + verb.
Exercise 6: Direct object pronouns (multiple choice)
Identify the direct objects in each sentence. From the options provided, select the equivalent sentence in which the direct object has been replaced by a direct object pronoun.
Exercise 7: Indirect object pronouns (multiple choice)
Identify the indirect objects in each sentence. From the options provided, select the equivalent sentence in which the indirect object has been replaced by an indirect object pronoun.
Exercise 8: Direct or indirect pronoun? (multiple choice)
Identify the objects in each sentence. Replace the underlined object by the appropriate direct or indirect object pronoun and select the correct version of the new sentence.
Exercise 9: Direct or indirect pronoun or ‘y’ or ‘en’ ? (multiple choice)
Identify the objects in each sentence. Replace the underlined object by the appropriate form of the object pronoun and select the correct version of the new sentence.
Exercise 10: Multiple pronouns with imperatives (multiple choice)
Replace the underlined object/s by the appropriate object pronouns (in the correct order) and select the correct version of the new sentence.
Exercise 11: Multiple pronouns with factitive and modal verbs, and verbs of perception (multiple choice)
Translate each sentence into French and select the correct version from the options provided.
Exercise 12: Demonstrative and possessive pronouns (write-in)
Fill in the blanks with the appropriate demonstrative or possessive pronoun/s.
