Chapter 5: Adverbs


Instructions

Chapter 5 has nine sets of exercises, with corresponding instructions for each exercise below.

Answers must use the appropriate capitalization/case, punctuation, and accents to be considered correct. Answers must be typed in lower case (except for initial capital letters a sentence) and use a full stop at the end of a sentence. Other examples of correct punctuation include putting a space before exclamation marks / question marks / semi-colons / colons in French; using French guillemets; putting titles (including film titles) in italics, and so on.

Exercise 1: Formation of adverbs with ‘-ment’ (write-in)

In each sentence, fill in the blanks by transforming the adjective in brackets into the corresponding adverb.

Exercise 2: Formation of adverbs: verb + adjective (multiple choice)

Complete the adverbial expressions in each sentence by selecting the most appropriate adjective.

Exercise 3: Phrases used as adverbs (write-in)

Translate the missing adverbs in brackets in each sentence by typing an appropriate phrase in the answer box.

Exercise 4: Types of adverbs: manner and degree (write-in)

Translate the missing adverbs in brackets in each sentence by typing an appropriate phrase in the answer box.

Exercise 5: Comparative and superlative adverbs (write-in)

In each sentence, change the adverb into the comparative or superlative form indicated in brackets. Type the new form in the answer box.

Exercise 6: Forms of ‘tout’ (multiple choice)

Fill in the blanks in each sentence with the correct form of ‘tout’.

Exercise 7: Adverbs and time reference (multiple choice)

In each sentence, select the correct translation of the time adverbs given in brackets.

Exercise 8: Adverbs of place (multiple choice)

In each sentence, select the correct translation of the place adverbs given in brackets.

Exercise 9: Position of adverbs (multiple choice)

For each sentence, select the answer that re-arranges the words to make it a grammatically correct, formal sentence in the affirmative (i.e., not in the interrogative).
