Chapter 8: Verb Constructions

Instructions

Chapter 8 has five sets of exercises, with corresponding instructions for each exercise below.

Answers must use the appropriate capitalization/case, punctuation, and accents to be considered correct. Answers must be typed in lower case (except for initial capital letters a sentence) and use a full stop at the end of a sentence. Other examples of correct punctuation include putting a space before exclamation marks / question marks / semi-colons / colons in French; using French guillemets; putting titles (including film titles) in italics, and so on.

Exercise 1: Intransitive verbs: ‘avoir’ or ‘être’ ? (multiple choice)

Select the best option to fill in the blanks by conjugating the infinitive in brackets in the compound past (perfect) tense in either the transitive or intransitive form as appropriate. Remember to use the correct auxiliary verb and to add a past participle agreement if necessary.

Exercise 2: Ditransitive verbs (write-in)

Complete each sentence by translating the phrases in brackets. Make sure that you use the most idiomatically appropriate word order possible when ordering the objects in each case! Only type your translation of the missing words in the box.

Exercise 3: The passive (multiple choice)

Translate each sentence into French if grammatically possible. Then select the most appropriate version from the options provided. If a passive construction is not possible in French, select the most idiomatic alternative available without a change in meaning.

Exercise 4: Pronominal verbs and past participle agreement (multiple choice)

Identify the past participles in each sentence and decide whether they need to agree with a subject or object. Select the correct version from the options provided.

Exercise 5: Impersonal verbs (write-in)

Complete each sentence by translating the impersonal verb in brackets. Type only your translation of the missing words in the answer box.
