The history of non-communist East Asia must be understood in terms of the influence of both the Pacific War and the Cold War. Within Japan the dire outcome of the Pacific War inculcated a desire among the populace never to repeat the follies of that conflict. This, allied with a desire to focus on economic growth, led Japan to have an ambivalent relationship with the Cold War in which it never became a fully armed ally of the United States. It did, however, benefit from the Cold War because the United States saw Japan\u2019s economic growth as being a vital contribution to Asian strategic security and political stability. South Korea and Taiwan were on the front line of the Cold War, and they too underwent significant economic growth. In part, this was a vital necessity due to the ever-present threat of war, but it was also influenced by the desire to make them symbols of the virtues of capitalism within the ideological battle with the socialist bloc. The economic strategies of Japan, South Korea and Taiwan did, though, differ from American free market capitalism as it involved greater state intervention. This has been referred to as the \u2018developmental state\u2019 model.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
