Pupils carrying out open-ended investigations to answer a particular question in science provide an example of this style. The knowledge and skills needed to participate in this method of learning depend on the building up of skills and self-knowledge in earlier learning experiences.

Learner-initiated style

At this point on the continuum, the stimulus for learning comes primarily from the pupil, who provides the question to investigate as well as the method of investigation. Thus, the pupil actively initiates the learning experience and the teacher provides support. Giving homework that allows pupils freedom to work on their own areas of interest in their own way might fall into this category. However, Mosston and Ashworth make the point that this kind of learning arises ‘only when an individual approaches the teacher and initiates a request to design his/her own learning experiences’. When teachers ask pupils to do a project it cannot be construed to be an example of this style’ (Mosston and Ashworth, 2002, p.284–285).

Press Enter or Space to flip the card

5.4 Improving Your Teaching

The additional materials for 5.4 include the practitioner research explainer video, as well as a useful ‘What is Action Research’ video link in YouTube.
