Researcher Reflection Videos

Throughout the text, the authors highlight the work of qualitative researchers from around the world, who share their expertise, guidance, and examples of qualitative research in action. Hear directly from some of the researchers here in these short videos!

Lana van Niekerk 

Dr Lana van Niekerk, a professor at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, reflects on her journey using qualitative research and recognizing its value and breadth in areas like occupational therapy. (Read her reflection in Ch. 5.)  

Victoria Mason-Robbie   

Dr Victoria Mason-Robbie, a lecturer and research fellow at the University of Worcester, reflects on a few examples of how qualitative research can be useful, some of the challenges and skills needed to apply it, and tips for students to get started. (Read her reflection in Ch. 8.)  

Dorothy Queiros  

Dr Dorothy Queiros, a lecturer at Unisa, talks about what inspired her to get involved in qualitative research – understanding the words, feelings, and perceptions of rural communities in South Africa – as well as some key lessons she would share with students currently learning qualitative research. Dr Hok Bun (Benjamin) Ku, a professor from the Department of Applied Social Science at Hong Kong Polytechnic University talks about action research, highlighting how it can work in an example of a project in a traditional mountain village in the Henan province of China. Susan M. Bridges  

Dr Susan M. Bridges, a professor at University of Hong Kong and University of Queensland, speaks here about her work in interdisciplinary teams, including clinical teams, and collaborative inquiry. She highlights how interdisciplinary teams can help enhance the possibilities of qualitative research, and the joys in seeing colleagues from different research disciplines come to new understandings together. Eric Laurier 

Dr Eric Laurier is a geographer at the University of Edinburgh who uses video ethnographic research in his work. In this video, he talks about a project he worked on and shares how it highlights things to think about when planning video ethnography, including the importance of building trust. Marcus Weaver-Hightower

Dr Marcus Weaver-Hightower, a professor at Virginia Tech, discusses a creative approach to analyzing and representing qualitative research: making and writing comics.
