College Student Development Theory in Action

A Guiding Framework for Higher Education Practice

This website is an interactive companion to College Student Development Theory in Action, designed to help educators and students see theory come alive in classroom and practice settings. The site serves as both a learning hub and a living example of SDTiA, showcasing how theory can meaningfully inform teaching, mentoring, supervision, and leadership in higher education. The materials illustrate how student development theory can be applied to enrich learning environments that reflect students’ intersecting identities, evolving societal contexts, and diverse educational journeys.

We provide a dynamic ecosystem of materials that demonstrate how SDTiA functions—how sociopolitical contexts shape the translation, teaching, and application of student development theory, and how educators can engage in ongoing theory-building while assessing their practice.

The site is organized into five sections:

  • Home
  • Guiding Frameworks
  • Learning Activities
  • Teaching Methods
  • Further Resources.

Introduces some of the foundational ideas behind SDTiA and features author reflections.

Orients users to what SDTiA is and how it functions as a guiding framework for higher education practice.

These sections work together to illustrate SDTiA in motion. They include sample assignments, course activities, and facilitation strategies that help educators and students critically apply theory to real-world experiences.

Provides additional materials such as sample syllabi, templates, and curated links that extend the SDTiA framework beyond the classroom.

New from renowned author team Renn, Haynes, Lange, Salinas, and Perez, College Student Development Theory in Action is a timely and accessible go-to source for teaching and learning college student development theory. Designed for use across student affairs preparation, counseling, psychology, adult education, human resource development, and leadership programs, this textbook takes an empirically based, theory-in-practice approach. College Student Development Theory in Action presents foundational concepts of how student development occurs – the processes underlying development – and then brings readers through a series of cases to introduce theories of social identity and cognitive, intercultural, and holistic development. Taking a critical approach and integrating sociopolitical contexts with reflective practice, this book emphasizes the value of using key concepts to adapt to constantly changing campus learning environments. Based on an investigation of what academic leaders, instructors, and student affairs professionals want and need from courses and books about student development theory, this new textbook is rich with suggested activities and online resources that help instructors customize their courses and facilitate the teaching and learning of student development theories.
